Little did you know, painless hair removal exists!
There’s a new sweet treat in Green Lake, but it’s far from conventional. Sugar Sugar, body sugaring and organic skincare salon, is newly nestled on the corner of northeast 65th street and 5th avenue northeast.
The salon boasts a cute and friendly space. White couches fill a corner of the sitting area, stocked with the latest magazines, while music echoes throughout. Halls are painted with bright colors and artwork adds a girly touch to Sugar Sugar. (Audrey Hepburn smiles at the end of the main hallway.)
In comparison to the tugging and yanking involved in waxing, often described as absolute Hell, sugaring is gentle and relatively pain-free hair removal. Sugar Sugar owner Michelle Burns and another sugaring specialist were eager to demo the procedure.
Melted sugar was already warmed in a pot to body temperature. It was a little sticky to the touch and while a bit gooey, but otherwise easy to grab hold of and apply.
Burns thinly spread a dollop of sugar onto her specialist. She pinched the end of the goop and pulled in the opposite direction of the few hairs on the specialist’s underarm. The sugar came off, leaving little residue, taking hairs with it.
I expected at least a cringe or two, but nope – the waxee was just nervous about getting her armpits cleared in front of a stranger.
That’s what you could expect if you decide to pay a visit to Sugar Sugar. The salon also offers sunless tanning to keep some color throughout winter. From Feb. 6 – 14, bring a friend and your tans will be $30 instead of $48 each. All bikini services are also 30 percent off until Valentine’s Day.
