The birds (and a raccoon) of Green Lake

Earlier today we received the following query from new Green Lake residents Ray and Janet: We are new to Seattle and GreenLake and in our daily walks enjoy watching the ducks etc. so much. However we do not know what the species other than the Mallards and Widgeons are. Could someone just list the common species we see? Also, does anyone know what happened to the Raccoon with the injured front leg that was hunting food at the water edge for a long time midmorning about 2-3 weeks ago? NE Seattle MOMS Club collecting shoes for Haiti

The NE Seattle chapter the MOMS Club will be collecting shoes tomorrow to aid in the ongoing relief efforts in Haiti. They will be collecting shoes in the Bathhouse parking lot tomorrow (Friday) morning at 9:30 a.m.  All shoes, new and used, are welcome and will be donated to Soles4Souls. The group will then be as walking around Green Lake.  All moms are welcome to join the walk. The NE Seattle chapter the MOMS Club is a newly formed chapter of MOMS Club International. Seattle Red Cross provides shelter to Green Lake Plaza residents displaced by Monday's fire

Monday’s fatal fire at Green Lake Plaza, which caused severe smoke damage to several units, left fourteen people temporarily homeless. The Seattle Red Cross has been tweeting updates on the displaced residents, who have been housed at the Green Lake Community Center (7201 East Green Lake Dr N).  The Red Cross has been providing not only shelter, but also emotional support. We swung by the Community Center today and it looks like the Red Cross is still in the neighborhood. Spotted at Green Lake: "Acupuncture Students Need Volunteers"

Spotted this morning on the east shores of Green Lake: Students from the Wu Hsing Tao School (4000 NE 41st St) have been setting up shop at the lake, offering free pulse diagnoses to passersby.  Interested?  They’ll be there for a while – this student still needs to clock in 600 more pulses.

Smoking to be banned in Seattle's parks

From our news partners at seattlepi.com: After April 1, add Seattle’s parks to the list of places smokers are no longer welcome. Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent Timothy Gallagher has signed off on a new code of conduct for the city’s more than 400 parks. A ban on smoking and all tobacco products is included. The West Seattle Blog first reported the news. Initital proposals included spitting as a behavior that could’ve been banned, but officials backed off that one after people complained that it was too intrusive.
