THE TIME IS RIGHT FOR THE VIOLET HOUR
An intriguing comedy of love, time, and the stock market
It’s that time — that wonderful New York hour when the evening’s about to reward you for that day.
~Denis (Denny) McCleary in The Violet HourSeattle Public Theater (SPT) travels back to the future in Richard Greenberg’s The Violet Hour, running January 29th through February 21st at the historic Bathhouse Theater on Green Lake.
It’s New York, 1919, a bubble in time after a horrible war and before a financial crash. Young publisher Denis McCleary, eager to make his mark upon the world, has to choose between publishing the work of a friend or a lover. The trajectory of their lives lies in the balance of his choice. When a mysterious machine appears, Denis must decide if the future is pre-written and unchangeable, or if he has the power – and the responsibility – to shape what is to come.
Tony Award-winning playwright Greenberg’s Three Days of Rain was a huge hit at SPT two years ago. Greenberg’s latest show to hit the Bathhouse stage is another artful, lyrical, play of words and ideas. The New York Post writes, “[The Violet Hour] skillfully balances heights of wit with depths of feeling. The language throughout is gorgeous. Among his peers, only Tony Kushner matches Mr. Greenberg in linguistic richness and playfulness.”
The Violet Hour is directed by Rita Giomi (Lobby Hero) and stars SPT favorites Evan Whitfield, Shawn Law, Shanna Allman, and Amber Wolfe, as well as Eric Reidmann in his SPT debut.
A graduate of Princeton University, Greenberg, has written over 25 plays including The Violet Hour and Take Me Out which won the 2003 Tony Award for Best Play. The New York native has won many awards including the Drama Desk Award and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. He was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for Three Days of Rain. The Violet Hour debuted on Broadway November 6, 2003 at the renovated Biltmore Theatre starring Robert Sean Leonard and Mario Cantone.
