We just received the following tip:
At approximately 8:30 PM tonight, there were several police cars circling the community center as well as the walking trail around the lake. They now have a road block at approximately 72nd and 5th Ave NE. Any idea as to what’s going on??
There were also reports on the GreenlakeMoms yahoo group about “police cars all over GreenLake in the area of 1st, 80th, 77th, and 5th Ave on Sat night 8:30pm.”
We’re looking into this right now and will update this post as we fill in the details about what happened.
For now, our best lead comes via @KIRO7Seattle on twitter:
WSP and Seattle Police chasing a suspect around the north end of Seattle after he crashed in a stolen vehicle pursuit.
Update, 9:33 p.m.: Just got word from Jonah at SeattleCrime.com – the police are chasing someone after a hit-and-run.
Update, 10:50 a.m. Sunday January 31: Reader Neal provides a bit more info in the comments to this post:
Heard the commotion outside our window last night. Me and my gf walked down to see what was going on. Was told by some of the neighbors that the red truck currently being towed was being chased by police when it crashed into a parked car and landed in someone’s yard. The driver of the truck fled the scene. We think they must have caught him because we didn’t see any helicopters or police activity in the neighborhood that would indicate they were looking for a suspect.
So, it sounds like police were in pursuit of a suspect in a red truck last night. At approximately 8:15 p.m., the suspect crashed the truck into a parked car at 5th Ave NE & NE Maple Leaf Place and took off on foot, prompting the major police presence that we all noted in the neighborhood last night.
We can’t confirm yet that they caught the guy, but we’ll let you know what we find out.
