Suspicious activity noted in East Green Lake neighborhood

What do you think? (7 Comments) December 23, 2009 at 8:19PM

Thanks to Cat for letting us know about the following suspicious activity in the neighborhood:

I saw someone looking intensely into a Jeep Wrangler on 4th ave ne between 65th and woodlawn ave yesterday [Tuesday, December 22] around noon.  Maybe he was just ‘looking’ inside, but it looked curious. He was wearing a hooded sweatshirt, hood up, baseball cap up, and had a back pack. He was probably any where between the age 25-40 years old – tall guy.

He was first looking on the passenger side for a bit, then stopped as a car drove by – then went to the other side – the drivers side – and looked inside. He didn’t find what he was looking for and walked off. It was odd.

Wanted to share – so we’re all extra careful.

And, from another reader, who lives near 5th Ave NE & NE 60th St:

All of these breaks-ins, people just walking right into houses, and car thefts are unsettling to say the least.

Our neighbors behind us had their house broken into last week, mid-day, and they must have made trips back and forth from the house to the alley for the amount of things that they took.

I have also seen what I’m sure was a drug deal go down in front of my house.  A car pulled up and a women who was walking down the street hopped in as it pulled up to the curb.  I could see her counting out bills and hand them to the male driver.  She sat in the car rocking back and forth as he talked to her and discretely handed something to her.  She got out and walked away in a different direction.  It all happened under five minutes, not long enough to call the police and have them be able to catch/follow, but long enough to feel really uncomfortable about the situation.

I’ve also seen a heavy set guy shifting through garbage bags that are full of what looks like a random mix of clothes, stereo equipment, CD’s etc (the scenario that seems to fit best is that they broke into a bunch of cars are were then sorting through the loot).

I’ve reported the shifty car activity, but don’t know what else to do. Having little kids in the house makes me cautious. I love this neighborhood, but I gotta say that all of this crime makes me want to move.

What do you think? Have all of the recent reports of crime in the neighborhood made you extra cautious?  Anyone else feeling thinking of moving…?

We have also noticed a lot of drug activity on Latona Ave between 61st and 59th. Cars will pull in and park and wait until another car pulls up. The deals usually happen under five minutes. We make sure to let the dealers and buyers know that they are seen. The police seem to respond in a quick manner but usually the deal is complete by the time they drive by. Neighbors just need to unite and retake our neighborhood

I wouldn't move because of it, but it needs to stop. I've seen a bicycle cop presence at Green Lake in the early afternoon, perhaps they should patrol in the evening instead. Or maybe set up a bait car and wait for it to be broken into, but then again there was the article today on the Roosevelt High gang kidnapping and shooting. It's a changing world, keep your eyes open!

Our neighbor's Jeep Cherokee got it's driver side window smashed. Nothing was taken out of the car. We are on 53rd and Latona.
I've noticed more crimes being noted here on the site. Perhaps it's a combination of hards times, holidays, people out of town, and more awareness.
But I have say, I believe in our Green Lake community and neighbors to the South (Wallingford), who have also chimmed in on wallyhood.org with break-ins. Moving isn't an option for us. I don't want the bad guys to win! We all just need to have good communication with our neighbors. I'll watch your back if you watch mine sorta thing.
