Green Lake's Walk Score

What do you think? (2 Comments) December 10, 2009 at 7:48PM

MyGreenLake.com reader Ref Lindmark wrote to let us know that the Seattle-based site Walk Score has recently added transit information to their walkability algorithm.

What is Walk Score?

Walk Score calculates the walkability of an address based on the distance from your house to nearby amenities. Walk Score measures how easy it is to live a car-lite lifestyle—not how pretty the area is for walking.

Once we got to the site, we couldn’t help but check out how Green Lake measures up.  We entered 6900 E Green Lake Way N, the address of the Circa Green Lake condos and apartments.  Circa’s Walk Score?  94 out of 100: “Walkers’ Paradise.”  Only 16% of Seattle residents have a higher walk score.  Nice.

Don’t live at Circa?  Neither do we.  One of us got a score of 94, but the other, who lives just a few blocks away, only clocked in at 66.  How does your Green Lake address rate?  Does the score make sense to you?

The score doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. Our address got a 97. Sounds great, except that some of that is based on classifying Bamboo Hardwoods as a hardware store. Seems the data is stale too – it includes the now-defunct Newberry Books and John Marshall School. I guess we’ll need to take the scores with a grain of salt.
