Police search Cowen Park for Maurice Clemmons, suspected Lakewood shooter

What do you think? (No Comments) November 30, 2009 at 4:49PM

We just got home from Ravenna’s Cowen Park, where – frankly – not a lot happened.  Here’s the story:

12:30 p.m.: we spotted the following on a SeattleCrime.com post detailing the manhunt for Maurice Clemmons, suspected Lakewood shooter.

Police are forming a perimeter around Cowen Park and pushing gathered members of the media back from their positions. Apparently traces of blood were found in a bathroom in the park. Scanner chatter indicates police are closing off segments of Brooklyn Ave. in the U-Dist.- Ravenna  area to pedestrians and car traffic.

Followed by this update at 12:50 p.m.:

Police near Cowen Place and Ravenna Blvd. have found a blood trail that begins at a King County Metro bus stop and leads off into Cowen Park.

At 12:55, we arrived at the scene.  This is what we saw:

cowen park1In other words, there was not a heck of a lot to see.  The police had blocked off the park and we couldn’t get very close.  At about 1:15, about 15-20 uniformed police officers seemed to be receiving a briefing near the playground.  They then walked deeper into the park and we could no longer see them.

At about 1:45, we heard word from Jonah of SeattleCrime.com, pictured below, that a man had shown up elsewhere at the park wearing full body armor and carrying a concealed weapon, apparently hoping to exact some vigilante justice.  The police intercepted the man, and it’s not clear what eventually happened to him.

By 2:15, most of the police had cleared out of the area and there was little to note.  So far, we have no word on the signigance, if any, of the trail of blood that led from the bus stop to the park.

At 3:15 p.m., we heard from Casey McNerthney of SeattlePI.com, pictured below, that there was once again a police presence at Cowen Park, although it didn’t seem like anything serious was going on.
