Metro Route 16 will be losing 33 bus stops

Metro Route 16, one of the major bus routes serving Green Lake, is undergoing a major change.  While the route is staying the same, 30% of the stops north of Denny Way are being eliminated.  The change will go into effect on Saturday, November 28th. Check here to see which stops are being axed.

Metro is in the middle of a project to consolidate the stops on Route 16, eliminating 33 of the 109 stops between Denny Way and the Northgate Transit Center.  Those 33 stops represent about 12% of the route’s riders.  The consolidation will bring the mean stop distance from 850 feet to about 1,225 feet (3 blocks), which is closer to Metro’s ideal separation.

The changes are expected to improve reliability and save about $50,000 a year in operating costs.

Update: November 26, 2009: Metro has decided to keep six of the stops originally slated for elimination.

This is a good thing, #16 is slow and late it has been for 20+ years. People can walk a little bit, the stops r too close together as it is.

why is this happening in the middle of the Fall bus schedule? Shouldn't this be something that is done when there is a new schedule?

thanks for posting this. maybe i'll take the 16 again instead of walking 10 blocks to the 26. i can't believe the delays have gone on for decades!

On Meridian Ave N some stops are only 2 blocks apart, which is crazy. So this is definitely a good thing AND I'll no longer have a bus idling right outside of my house and have some extra street parking!
