Help rid Green Lake of milfoil Halloween morning
Don’t have a Halloween costume yet? Well, cover yourself in milfoil and you’re Swamp Thing! But seriously, help keep our fair lake from becoming a swamp.
Many of the trees along Green Lake are starting to show their fall colors, but another sign of fall is not so welcome — the milfoil collecting and rotting along parts of the shoreline. The tangles of milfoil can interfere with boaters and swimmers, and the rotting vegetation provides nutrients for algae blooms and reduces oxygen in the water. In order to remove milfoil and fallen leaves from the shallows and from the shore, the Friends of Green Lake (FOGL) is having a cleanup party on Saturday, Oct. 31st, 10 AM to 12:30 PM. Come if you can! It will be a nice chance to meet and work with other fans of Green Lake.
Volunteers will meet at the dock near the Boat Rental (pedal boats) at the NE corner of the lake, near Green Lake Community Center (across the street from the Green Lake Library). A representative of the Seattle Parks Department will be there to help, and the department will provide tools, boots and gloves for the project. Volunteers may want to bring their own gloves, rubber boots, or hip waders if they have them, and drinking water. To volunteer, please reply by email or telephone to FOGL member, Steven Quarterman; squarterman(at)gmail(dot)com or cell (301) 509-8549.
